The Story
From Benton
to the world stage.
Born in Kenosha, Wisconsin and raised in Benton, Pennsylvania, Zain Retherford built his name the hard way, finishing high school 131–3 with two state titles and a Cadet World Championship before he ever set foot on a college campus.
At Penn State, under Cael Sanderson, he became one of the most dominant wrestlers in NCAA history: three national titles, three Big Ten crowns, two Dan Hodge Trophies, and a 128–3 career mark. The "Zain Train" was never about flash. It was about pace, pressure, and a will that broke opponents in the third period.
Pace, pressure, and a motor that doesn't quit. The formula never changed.
On the senior level he carried that same identity to the world: World silver in 2022, World gold in 2023, a Pan-American title, and a spot on the 2024 U.S. Olympic Team. Now, back from a two-year layoff, he's added another World Team to the résumé, proof the climb is far from over.
